Dr. Jeff Karp is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Principal Faculty at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and an affiliate faculty at the Broad Institute and at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. His work spans the fields of drug delivery, medical devices, stem cell therapeutics, and tissue adhesives. Several technologies developed in his lab have formed the foundation for multiple products currently under development and for the launch of six companies that have raised over $100 million in funding. These companies include, Skintifique (a skincare company), Gecko Biomedical (a tissue adhesive company), Alivio Therapeutics (an inflammation targeting company), Frequency Therapeutics (a regenerative medicine company), Molecular Infusions (a cannabinoid company), and Landsdowne Labs (a child safety company).
In addition to his research goals, Karp is dedicated to the career development of next-generation bioengineers looking to work at the forefront of regenerative medicine. Karp was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Undergraduate Mentor among all faculty at MIT and he received the HST McMahon Mentoring Award for being the top mentor of Harvard-MIT students. Karp strives to create an educationally conducive environment that fosters the development of scientific confidence.

Catastrophe Averted: AI That Continues to Learn After Deployment

One of the major hassles of Deep Learning is the need to fully retrain the network on the server every time new data becomes available in order to preserve the previous knowledge. This is called "catastrophic forgetting," and it severely impairs the ability to develop truly autonomous AI (artificial intelligence). This problem is solved by simply training on the fly — learning new objects without having to retrain on the old. Imagine a toy that can learn to recognize and react to its owner, or a drone that can learn and detect objects of interest identified while in flight. Without catastrophic forgetting, this is all possible.
Neurala's Anatoly Gorshechnikov will discuss how state-of-the-art accuracy, as well as real-time performance suitable for deployment of AI directly on the edge, moves AI out of the server room and into the hands of consumers, allowing for technology that mimics the human brain.
Anatoly Gorshechnikov, Neurala's co-founder and CTO, has over 15 years of experience in the development of massively parallel software for neural computation, and was one of the pioneers in applying GPGPU to neural modeling. At Neurala, he manages the tech team and oversees the technology's development. Anatoly has a Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems from Boston University and an MS in Computer Science. As an Assistant Professor at Boston University, Anatoly introduced over 70 students to computational modeling of the brain and guided several of them through their Ph.D. programs.
He has over 30 scientific publications to his name on topics including neural modeling of rodent spatial processing and navigation, massively parallel software for modeling neural activity, and perspectives and mechanisms of standardization of these models and underlying software.

The Impact of IoT on Engineering Jobs

As the Internet of Things (IoT) pushes automation to new heights, people will perform fewer and fewer "simple tasks." Does that mean the demand for highly technical employees will increase as the need for less-technical employees decreases? What will be the immediate and long-term effects on the overall job market? What about our privacy and is the IoT secure? Cees Links, wireless pioneer, entrepreneur, and general manager of the Low Power Wireless group at Qorvo, will address these questions, as well as expectations for IoT's impact on society, in this keynote presentation.
Cees Links is known for being a pioneer in wireless data and the visionary who brought the worlds of mobile computing and continuous networking together. Links studied at the Twente University of Technology in the Netherlands where he earned a Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering.
A significant figure in wireless computing, Links began his career at NCR computers where he managed the development and launch of the world's first wireless LAN product. Links continued his work in the wireless LAN area, where he secured a groundbreaking deal with Apple Computers in 1999 that sparked tremendous growth of the industry and culminated with wireless LAN as a standard notebook computer feature.
In 2004, Links founded GreenPeak Technologies, a fabless semiconductor company with a focus on wireless technology for ultra-low power sense and control networks for consumer electronics. GreenPeak was acquired by Qorvo in 2016 and today, Links serves as General Manager of Qorvo's Low Power Business Unit.
